2016 IWA National Trailboat Festival venue announced
It has been announced that the IWA National Trailboat Festival will be held on the Chesterfield Canal in Derbyshire next year, hosted by the Chesterfield Canal Trust. The Trust hosted previous IWA Trailboat Festivals in 2002 and 2005, but these were at Tapton Lock.
The Festival itself will be on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May. Monday 30th will be a boaters’ day with a trip in convoy up to the River Rother in Chesterfield, the source of the canal. If work has started, it may even be possible to go up the river to the new Waterside Lock.
The Festival will be held at Staveley Town Basin, where successful Canal Festivals were held in 2012, 2013 and 2014. There is a slipway at the basin. It is hoped that the new Staveley Town Lock, which is on the Basin site, will be formally opened at the Festival.
In Derbyshire, there is an isolated five mile restored stretch of the Chesterfield Canal. It goes from the River Rother to the Basin. There are five locks, plus the new one.
